Walled old town

Old stone walls close in on the Croatia racing game, and the lap goes round them and then over the top. You race on a track drawn from Croatia's outline: up the Adriatic coast from Splitsko-Dalmatinska through Dalmatia and Zadar to Istarska and Rijeka, then inland through Karlovacka and Krapinsko-Zagorska to Osijek in the east, and back west along the border to Karlovac. Nineteen corners in all, in four kilometres.

The Croatian Grand Prix is a coastal race round a walled old town, in the spirit of Dubrovnik, with 50 metres of climb.

Around the Croatia track

Dubrovnik's city walls are the set piece: the road runs along them, so stone fills one side of your view. Further round stand the arena from Pula and a Dalmatian bell tower, with olive groves and vineyards on the slopes above the sea. Cars and mopeds are parked by the fences. The banner says Dobro došli, and the boards name Split, Istra, Dalmacija, Plitvice and Zagreb.

How to drive the Croatia circuit

Turn 1, Splitsko-Dalmatinska, is the slowest corner too. You arrive off a 460-metre straight and have to get down to 62 km/h, which makes it a hard braking zone and the best place to pass. Later the road climbs to a crest where the car goes light, so keep it straight over the top.
