Akwaaba, reads the banner, and the Ghana racing game starts on the coast. It's a race track shaped like Ghana, 4.9 km with 15 corners. From the Gold Coast the lap swings west to the Ivory Coast corner, climbs inland through Western and Brong Ahafo to Upper West and Upper East, crosses by Bawku, then comes south through Northern, Yendi and Pawa to Volta and back to the sea.
The Ghanaian Grand Prix is a cliff road with 32 metres of climb, and a mist rolls in over the water.

Around the Ghana track
Independence Arch is the landmark, and Cape Coast Castle stands on the shore further round. Look out for the fantasy coffins by the roadside, carved into bright, unusual shapes. Oil palms and banana plants grow between the bends, and minibuses and yellow taxis are parked behind the fences. The boards name Kumasi, Volta, Takoradi, Tamale, Cape Coast and Accra, and the mist keeps the horizon soft.

How to drive the Ghana circuit
The 710-metre main straight ends at the Gold Coast, turn 1, and the slowest corner follows straight away: the Ivory Coast at 74 km/h. That makes the opening pair the place to pass and the place to lose it. After that the cliff road rolls inland, with 32 metres of climb.
