Heard Island sits far out in the Southern Ocean, and the game still gives it a race. The Heard Island racing game is a winter circuit on a track drawn from Heard Island's coastline: from Spit Point it rounds Cape Lavett and West Bay, passes Macey Cone and Sydney Cove, climbs by Mount Aubert de la Rue, and comes back through Corinth Head and Corinthian Bay. Nine corners in 4.3 km, all of them in falling snow.

It's a glacier course with dramatic elevation, 108 metres of climb, and the Grand Prix of Heard Island runs in snowfall from start to finish.

Around the Heard Island track

Big Ben, the island's snow-capped volcano, rises above everything. King penguins gather near the track, icebergs drift offshore, and the ground is glacier and tundra. A few small arctic huts stand in the snow, snowmobiles are parked by the fences, and a flag-waving crowd has made the trip anyway. The banner says Welcome to Heard Island, and that's all the boards say too.

How to drive the Heard Island circuit

The main straight runs 950 metres and ends at Spit Point, turn 1, which is also the slowest corner of the lap at 67 km/h. That makes it the biggest stop on the circuit, and in the snow it comes up quicker than you expect. The elevation is dramatic, with the road rising and falling across the glacier.
