Volcanoes shape the El Salvador racing game, a mountain lap with 19 corners crammed into 4.6 km. It runs on a track drawn from El Salvador's outline, the only Central American country with no Caribbean coast. It starts at Sonsonate, climbs north through Ahuachapán and Santa Ana to Chalatenango, crosses east to San Miguel and Morazán, then comes back along the coast by La Unión, Usulután and the Península San Juan del Gozo.

The Salvadoran Grand Prix is a dramatic mountain race with 79 metres of climb. Every corner is named after a real town, point or island on the map.

Around the El Salvador track

The Monumento al Divino Salvador del Mundo stands at the heart of the scenery, with a volcano rising behind it. A colonial church sits in town, sugarcane covers the lower slopes, and the ground is dark and volcanic. Pickups and buses are parked by the fences. The banner says Bienvenidos a El Salvador, and the boards name Santa Ana, San Miguel, La Libertad, Izalco and San Salvador.

How to drive the El Salvador circuit

Sonsonate, turn 1, comes at the end of an 880-metre straight, the longest flat-out run you get. From there the road climbs and falls round the volcano through 18 more corners. The slowest is Usulután at 74 km/h, turn 18, the second-last corner, so a good exit there sets up the final bend and the straight.
