The northern lights hang over the Iceland racing game, and steam rises from the ground beside the road. It runs on a track drawn from Iceland's coastline, running from Suðurland and Suðurnes up the west to Vestfirðir and Ísafjörður, along the Denmark Strait that separates Iceland from Greenland, across the north through Akureyri and Kópasker, and down the east to Höfn. Eighteen corners in 4.0 km.

This is a winter circuit on volcanic ground, dramatic with 80 metres of climb, and the Icelandic Grand Prix throws in a crest and a dip for good measure.

Around the Iceland track

The tall spire of Hallgrímskirkja rises over the town, and the rest is raw volcanic country: a volcano on the horizon, geyser steam pouring from the ground, turf houses with grass roofs, and timber buildings in Nordic colours. Tundra covers the land, SUVs are parked behind the fences, and the aurora glows green overhead. The banner reads Velkomin til Íslands; the boards name Geysir, Hekla, Vatnajökull and Húsavík.

How to drive the Iceland circuit

The main straight is 460 metres and ends at Suðurland, turn 1. Norðurland vestra, turn 11 on the north coast, is the slowest at 77 km/h. Along the way there's a crest where the car goes light and a dip that loads it up, and the steam can hide what's ahead.
