Sand hangs in the air over this Mauritania racing game, a lap of open dunes and very little else. The track is drawn from Mauritania's border: from Hodh ech Chargui in the east it heads west through Guidimaka, Trarza and Rosso, up the coast to Dakhlet Nouadhibou and Cap Blanc, then inland through Adrar, Bir Mogrein and the two Tiris Zemmour corners to Chegga.

The Grand Prix of Mauritania is a desert layout, flat with 9 metres of climb across 4.3 km.

Around the Mauritania track

Two landmarks share the horizon: the old mosque at Chinguetti and the great rings of the Richat Structure, the 'Eye of the Sahara'. Closer in, camels and a desert ksar sit by the track, and the buildings are Sahel mud houses. Dunes roll away on every side, softened by the sand haze. Land Cruisers wait by the fences, the banner greets you in Arabic, and the boards read Nouakchott.

How to drive the Mauritania circuit

The 830-metre main straight runs into Hodh ech Chargui at turn 1. It's a quick, flat lap with few hard stops. The slowest corner is Tiris Zemmour 2, turn 11, at 86 km/h, the second of a pair in the north, so a clean line through both sets up the last corner at Chegga.
