Sand, sky and the Pyramids of Meroë: this Sudan racing game lays a 4.3 km lap over open dunes and calls it the Sudanese Grand Prix. The track is drawn from Sudan's border, and its ten corners are named after the places that border passes. You leave the Nubian Desert, round the cape at Ra’s Kasr, swing south through Blue Nile and El Gezira, cross South Kordufan, and come back up the western side towards the Northern region.

With only 19 metres of climb it's a gently rolling lap, and the long sweeps reward a smooth line.

Around the Sudan track

The Pyramids of Meroë stand over the dunes, steep-sided and grouped together, and they stay in view for much of the lap. Closer in, a felucca sits on the Nile and a Khartoum mosque rises above low mud-walled buildings. Land cruisers and rickshaws are parked behind the fences, with the odd camel among them. The crowd waves flags, the welcome banner is written in Arabic, and the boards read Omdurman, Port Sudan, Meroë and Khartoum.

How to drive the Sudan circuit

The 780-metre main straight runs into the Nubian Desert at turn 1, and that's where most of the passing happens. The slowest corner is Chaîne des Mongos at 85 km/h, deep in the second half of the lap, so carry what speed you can through the rest. The dunes rise and fall without ever turning steep.
