You race a track drawn from Eritrea's outline, starting at Maekel and Mendefera, swinging west through Gash Barka, Tella and Sitona, north to Semenawi Keyih Bahri and Ra's Kasr, then down the Red Sea coast through Massawa, Ras Herbe and Ras Shab Shiaks to Assab.

Asmara's Fiat Tagliero service station is the landmark, with the city's cathedral and an Italian café close by. The buildings are Mediterranean in style, and out beyond the plateau the land turns to dunes. Cars and bicycles are parked along the fences. The banner greets you in Tigrinya, the sky is clear, and the boards read Asmara. Most of the lap runs high across the plateau.
