A crater of burning gas sits out in the dunes of this Turkmenistan racing game, and it's hard to miss. The track is drawn from Turkmenistan's border, starting in the south-west at Bugor Kayalydzha, running north through Balkanabat and along the Caspian Sea past Türkmenbaşy and Garabogaz Bay, then east across the desert through Koneurgench and Tashauz to Chardzhou and Mary.

Open dunes, 25 metres of climb, and twelve corners over 4.3 km.

Around the Turkmenistan track

The Darvaza crater glows in the sand, a pit of fire in the middle of the desert, and the Neutrality Arch stands over the city. Glass towers rise above the dunes, an Akhal-Teke horse stands by the track, and cotton fields break up the sand. Land cruisers and cars are parked behind the fences, the welcome banner reads Hoş geldiňiz, and the boards name Mary, Türkmenabat, Karakum, Dashoguz and Ashgabat.

How to drive the Turkmenistan circuit

The 890-metre main straight runs to Bugor Kayalydzha at turn 1. The corner to respect is Gëksay, turn 7, at just 58 km/h, the slowest on the lap and a hard stop after the run past Garabogaz Bay. Over the dunes the road only rises and dips gently, so the braking zones are where time is found.
