Rock canyon

In the Iran racing game, the lap runs through a rock canyon in drifting sand haze. This is a track drawn from Iran's border and coastline: from Zahedan it heads south through Baluchistan to the Gulf of Oman, along the Persian Gulf by Hormozgan, Khuzestan and Abadan, up through Kermanshah and the Zagros Mountains to West Azarbaijan and Ardebil, then east along the Elburz Mountains to Golestan and Razavi Khorasan. Fifteen corners in 4.3 km.

The Iranian Grand Prix rolls rather than climbs, with 29 metres of elevation in all, and the haze softens the view ahead.

Around the Iran track

The Azadi Tower is the landmark here, its arched form rising above the road. The Shah Mosque, with its blue tiled dome, and a row of windcatchers sit in courtyard-style town sections, and the land around is flat-topped mesas and sand dunes. Cars and Land Cruisers are parked by the fences, flags fly in the crowd, and a banner reads خوش آمدید. Esfahan, Shiraz, Tabriz and the Caspian are on the boards.

How to drive the Iran circuit

A 460-metre main straight ends at Zahedan, turn 1. The slowest corner is West Azarbaijan, turn 11, at 85 km/h, up in the north-west. With rolling ground and no really slow corners, it's a quick lap where the sand haze, not the gradient, is the main thing to manage.
