Twenty corners in 3.1 km leaves very little room to rest. In this Azerbaijan racing game the streets follow a track drawn from Azerbaijan's border: the lap leaves Abşeron for Bakı and the Absheron Peninsula, runs south down the coast through Masallı and Astara, turns inland through Yardımlı and Cəlilabad, then follows the outline west and back along the north through Tovuz, Qazax, Qax and Balakən to finish at Xaçmaz.

The Azerbaijan Grand Prix is a street race in the spirit of Baku, with 45 metres of climb into the old city.

Around the Azerbaijan track

The three Flame Towers stand over the city, and the Maiden Tower guards the old quarter below. The lap squeezes through narrow streets between old buildings, then opens onto the seafront along the Caspian. Out of town, oil pumpjacks nod among the cotton fields. Glass towers fill the modern district, Ladas and cars park by the kerbs, and the banner says Xoş gəlmisiniz. Boards read Baku City, Ganja, Shaki, Caspian and Sumgait.

How to drive the Azerbaijan circuit

The main straight is only 220 metres and ends at Abşeron. Bakı, turn 2, is the slowest corner at 67 km/h. Then the road climbs into the old city and narrows into a squeeze where the walls come close, before you're let loose along the seafront. Twenty corners leave no time to relax.
