The Djibouti racing game keeps you beside the sea for much of its 4.9 km. It's a track drawn from Djibouti's outline: from Hamawle and Baï to Obock, round the Bab el Mandeb, the strait between the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, and along the gulf to Tadjoura and Baie Blondeau, before heading inland through Djibouti, Ali Sabieh and Dikhil. Thirteen corners, each named for a place on the map.

The Grand Prix of Djibouti runs on a cliff road with 32 metres of climb.

Around the Djibouti track

Lake Assal and the Hamoudi Mosque are the main landmarks, and the limestone chimneys out on the plain make strange shapes on the horizon. A dhow sits off the coast. Dunes run up to the roadside, Land Cruisers and minibuses are parked behind the barriers, and the banner says welcome in Arabic and French. Clear skies, the sea on one side, and Djibouti on the boards.

How to drive the Djibouti circuit

The 620-metre main straight ends at Hamawle, turn 1, where most of the passing happens. The slowest corner is Tadjourah at 72 km/h, turn 8, right after Tadjoura and Baie Blondeau, so the middle of the lap is where time is won or lost. The cliff road rolls rather than climbs, with 32 metres of rise in all.
