Eighteen corners in four kilometres make the Costa Rica racing game a lap that never sits still. It runs on a track drawn from Costa Rica's outline. From Sixaola and Limón it cuts across to Golfito and the Península de Osa, works up the Pacific side through Puntarenas, Cañas and the Península de Nicoya to Guanacaste and Liberia, then turns inland at La Cruz for Alajuela, Heredia and Laguna Pereira.

The Costa Rican Grand Prix runs through volcanic rainforest with 95 metres of climb.

Around the Costa Rica track

Arenal Volcano towers over the rainforest, and the road runs right past it. A waterfall comes down through the trees beside the track. Look out for the painted oxcart and the theatre from San José, banana plants all round, and pickups and buses parked by the fences. The banner says Pura vida, and the boards name Limón, Arenal, Guanacaste, Monteverde and San José.

How to drive the Costa Rica circuit

The 500-metre main straight is short, and it ends at Sixaola, turn 1. After that comes a climb to a hairpin and a steep plunge back down, so the lap rewards rhythm more than raw speed. The slowest corner is Cañas at 62 km/h, turn 10, just before the Península de Nicoya.
